The plot of the novel “The Dead Donkey and the Guillotined Woman” (1829) by the French writer Jules Janin (1804-1874) is a tragic love story: the young heroine, who first appears on the pages of the book as an innocent beauty, joyfully galloping on a graceful donkey across the spring lawns, gradually becomes corrupted, sinks to the bottom of the city, commits a crime and dies on the guillotine; her donkey finds death in a slaughterhouse, and the hero in love, having experienced a difficult spiritual drama, loses all life's illusions. The novel was extremely popular in Russia during Pushkin's time. Published in a modern translation.
