Alexander Blok, perhaps the most significant poet of the 20th century, is inextricably linked with the era of Russian symbolism. It is impossible to understand Blok outside of literary and everyday relations, outside the conditions of the emergence, flourishing and decay of symbolism. And a book about Blok should be a book about the Symbolists, and the history of Blok’s fate should be the history of the entire literary movement of Symbolism. Therefore, the authors’ task is to show not only Blok as a person – the bearer of an isolated personal destiny, but as Blok as a poet, a representative of a great aesthetic culture.
