Irish historian, Byzantinist, professor of modern history at Cambridge University John Bagnell Bury dedicated his work to the history of the gradual decline and collapse of the Roman Empire, oppressed by barbarians. The author clearly showed that the Roman army was not the victim of a strong external enemy, but found itself corroded from within, first by a set of foreign recruits, and then by its own command, the highest posts of which were occupied by barbarians, whose numerous tribes poured into the European continent through Italy.
