The Art of Form is an exposition of the system of training artists created by Johannes Itten for his famous Fourth Course at the Bauhaus, one of the most innovative schools of art, architecture and design of the 20th century.
Training for all students in the Bauhaus it began with Itten's Forkurs. It was unconventional. In his book, Itten writes that his main task was the need to develop in future artists, architects, and designers a keen sense of form and material, to teach them to think creatively in any situation. Therefore, in his classes, a lot of attention was paid to the figurative perception of form. The book details his system of special exercises for beginning artists, which even includes music and rhythmic movements to teach them to “get into the image” of a form. And only in this way, according to Itten, can you hit the target and the study can turn into a work of art.
Itten introduces the basics of the professional work of artists, for whom it is necessary to know what rhythm and accent points of the composition are, what the role of texture is form and material, how to see and convey it in the depiction of objects and plot themes, how to use color contrasts, etc. The text is illustrated with a large number of educational works carried out by his students at the Bauhaus and other schools, where Itten continued to develop the methods of his forecourse.< /p>
