Evgenia Aleksandrovna Masalskaya-Surina (born Shakhmatova, 1862-1940), author of “Memories of my brother A. A. Shakhmatov,” which tells about the young years of the outstanding Russian philologist Alexei Alexandrovich Shakhmatov. “History with Geography” is a continuation of the family chronicle. Even during his student years, in 1888, A. A. Shakhmatov met the Norwegian Olaf Brock, who came to Moscow to study the Russian language. A friendship began between them. Masalskaya continued to maintain relations with Brock after her brother’s death in 1920. A typewritten copy of “History with Geography” was forwarded to Brock and preserved in his archive at the Norwegian National Library in Oslo. In 1903, Evgenia Alexandrovna married Viktor Adamovich Masalsky-Surin, at first they lived on the Shakhmatov family estate. But in 1908 the couple decided to start their own farm. First, the choice falls on an estate in Mogilev, then in Volyn province. Mortgages, loans, banks, intermediaries... As a result, the Masalskys buy the Glubokoe estate in the Vilna province. At the beginning of the First World War, Viktor Adamovich was drafted into the army, and in 1916 he died of dysentery. After the revolution, Glubokoye finds itself abroad. Evgenia Alexandrovna comes there several times, trying to save the farm, but every year it becomes more and more difficult. This is the story with geography, reproducing the atmosphere of private life at the beginning of the 20th century, serving as a background to the story about her brother’s academic affairs and E. A. Masalskaya’s own historical research .The publishing layout is saved in PDF A4 format.
