Petr Sorokin's book examines the history of the Neva region in a broad territorial and temporal context - from the Ice Age to the present. One of the central episodes in it is the Battle of the Neva in 1240 at the mouth of the Izhora River, inextricably linked in the minds of the people with the image of Alexander Nevsky, the patron saint of St. Petersburg. Many historical events that took place on the Neva during the Viking Age, during the Crusades in the Baltic and the Northern War of 1700–1721 turned out to be little known or forgotten. And these places remember Alexander Nevsky, Peter the Great, Alexander Menshikov, Catherine the Great and the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Many monuments were also forgotten. All this is reflected on the pages of the book offered to the reader. Historical documents, many of which have not been previously published, are supplemented in the book with data obtained during the author's archaeological research. The publication is illustrated with photographs, engravings, drawings, plans and maps. It is intended for everyone interested in the history of the Nevsky region and Russia.
