In the process of writing this book, Robert Rockaway spoke with elderly Jewish bandits and members of their families. He never knew what his characters would say or do next, so he was prepared for any eventuality. Robert Rockaway was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. In 1970, he received a doctorate in history from the University of Michigan. After that, he taught at the University of Texas, and in 1971 he moved to Israel. Since then he has worked in the Department of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University. Robert Rockaway now lives with his family in Herzliya Pituach (Israel).
