Patricia Wentworth is a literary pseudonym. Real name - Dorothy Amy Elles Dillon Turnbull November 10, 1878 - January 28, 1961...Born in Mussoorie, India, she was the daughter of a British officer. She was educated at Blackheath Grammar School in London, where she and her two brothers were sent to live with their grandmother. After graduating from school, she returned to India and published several historical essays in periodicals. In 1906, she married Colonel George Dillon, who soon died, leaving her and four children with almost no means. Dorothy Ellis and her children return to England. She begins to write for income and publishes six historical novels from 1910 to 1915. When publishing one of them in 1910, she took a pseudonym Patricia Wentworth. In 1920, Patricia married Lieutenant George Oliver Turnbull and moved to Surrey. Her husband supported her in her literary work; Patricia Wentworth dictated many of her novels to him. In 1913, Patricia published her first detective novel, The Fire Within. Her most famous character, former governess and amateur detective Miss Maud Silver, appeared in her 1928 novel Gray Mask. The image of the observant old maid Maude Silver was not the first in the history of the genre, but it was 2 years ahead of the appearance of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Patricia Wentworth laid the first stones in the foundation of a real English detective story; her works belong to the “Golden” age of the detective story - the classic whodunnits style. Patricia Wentworth wrote about 70 classics detectives, 32 of which made up the series about Miss Maud Silver.
