Novel “Michael. German fate in diary sheets" was written in 1923, long before its author took major party posts in the Third Reich. This work, although it contains some reflections on politics, obviously did not pursue political goals, since at the time of its writing the author was inspired by a single dream - to become a writer and, through his supervisor, the famous German literary critic of half-Jewish origin F. Gundolf, to get into circle C George - the most famous German symbolist poet, a classic, whose poems have been published in more than one edition. And only after becoming disillusioned with literature, after writing the novel, Goebbels decided to go into politics. First of all, this novel represents a youthful, largely naive, but at the same time, daring orientation towards previous generations of writers: romantics, realists, symbolists, expressionists. Youthful immaturity determines the author’s delight, frankness, spontaneity of thinking and feelings, his constantly honed aphorism, which is strongly reflected in the text. The novel is imbued with the tangible influence of Goethe, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, the Gospel. Some controversial issues in the novel today seem an absolute anachronism, but it should be remembered that in the era when the novel was created, they had not a marginal, but a wide circulation in all layers of society , therefore we have no right to reproach the author for certain views that could not even be his personal. In 1987, the novel “Michael” was published in English translation in New York (Amok Press).
