Dan Jacobson's novel God-Fearing (1992) is both a parable and a historical fiction. The action of the novel conventionally takes place in medieval Europe, but such events could have happened in any era, because people in times of disaster at all times are often set against people of another nation or another faith. The main character of the novel, the well-meaning bookbinder Kob, is constantly visited by ghosts on the threshold of death, a boy and the girl, he doesn’t remember who they are, but they force him little by little to recall the events of his youth, when, out of fear and herd feelings, he took part in the persecution of people of other faiths. This act ruined his life and now does not allow him to die in peace. Watching how subtly Dan Jacobson explores the psychology and motivation of the average conformist is not only instructive, but also fascinating.
