Cyrus G. Gordon, a professor of Near Eastern studies at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, uses a rich evidence base to argue that Greek and Jewish culture are largely co-evolving structures that arose from a common Eastern Mediterranean foundation. Archaeological discoveries, especially text tablets, and knowledge of Hebrew and Greek allowed the scientist to identify the common heritage of the 2nd millennium BC of Hellas and Israel. A comparison of Homer's epic poem about the Mycenaean age and the Hebrew text covering the period of the conquest of Canaan and the reign of David, having a common ground both in a geographical and chronological cultural sense, reveals the true traditions of the so-called heroic age of the Eastern Mediterranean.
