This volume continues the publication of the Russian translation of “Gao Sen Zhuan” (“Lives of Worthy Monks”) - the most important source on the history of early Chinese Buddhism, a classic monument of Chinese literature, an exemplary work in the genre of Buddhist biography, which became widespread in China, and then in Korea and Japan. The second volume includes translations of the biography of the largest section, “Interpreters,” which occupies two-fifths of the total volume of the monument. Buddhist exegesis in China is a sphere of religious activity carried out in the form of preaching, commentary, debate and is most associated with the perception, adaptation and transposition of Buddhist doctrine. The translation is preceded by a research article on the activities of exegetes in China in the first half of the 1st millennium AD. e. and is provided with comments and indexes.
