Ultrasound diagnostics is a visual technique that offers broad prospects in practical veterinary medicine. However, to obtain the most comprehensive information from an ultrasound examination, it is first necessary to obtain a good quality image, and secondly, to become familiar with the normal ultrasound picture of various body tissues. Only in this case can one assess the degree of deviation from the norm and associate these deviations with illness or injury. The purpose of this book is to become a practical guide to ultrasound examination of dogs and cats. Photographs showing normal and abnormal structures of the body have been selected as illustrations; accompanying graphic diagrams are provided to explain these images, which may be unclear to the inexperienced eye. As in any field of practice, there is no substitute for personal practice in ultrasound examinations, but the book aims to provide a basis on which to begin the practice of ultrasound diagnostics. I hope that as the practicing veterinarian masters this technique, the text and illustrations will remain useful as reference material.
