Jesse L. Byock is an expert on Old Icelandic and medieval Scandinavia and a professor in the Department of Scandinavian Studies and the Cotsen Institute of Archeology at California State University, Los Angeles. Jesse L. Byock leads the Mossy Mountain archaeological expedition in Iceland. He has written numerous works on medieval Iceland and the sagas, including the books Iceland in the Middle Ages: Society, Sagas and Power and Feud in the Icelandic Saga, as well as translations into English of The Sagas of the Välsungs, The Sagas of Hrolf Kraki " and "Younger Edda". Bayok studied in Iceland (where as a young man he lived on farms in the northern fjords and herded sheep), Sweden, France and America and received a doctorate from Harvard University; his supervisor was the famous philologist Albert Bates Lord. Viking Age Iceland is Bajök's magnum opus, providing a panoramic picture of medieval Icelandic society with its unique structure and complex legal system. Rich illustrative material is provided by examples from the Icelandic sagas, which, with proper analysis, turn out to be a true treasure for the researcher. This edition includes “The Saga of the People from Armor Fjord” and “The Saga of Gudmund the Worthy,” which have not previously been translated into Russian.
