The legends about the antiquities of the Britons are of a completely special kind. For the entire Western culture, Britain was a truly mysterious island where fairies and elves lived, where the knights of King Arthur performed their exploits. Wise Druids performed miracles here and uttered prophecies about the future, with an effort of will they built sanctuaries from giant stone slabs... Is it possible to perceive these wonderful legends as manifestations of a holistic, albeit half-forgotten spiritual tradition? This is exactly how the Scottish writer and religious scholar Lewis Spence (1874–1955) approaches the topic; his book about the secret teachings and rituals of the Druids, published for the first time in Russian, is not out of date to this day.
