On the seventh day in the unfinished novel by the classic of Austrian literature Franz Kafka “The Castle” (1922), the exhausted surveyor K., before his death, must receive news: the Castle does not recognize him as a surveyor, but allows him to stay in the Village. In the book of the modern Austrian writer Marianne Gruber ( b. 1944) day seven turns into day one: her surveyor makes a new attempt to penetrate the absurdly mysterious structure, the center of power, overcoming both the “terror of the environment” and the darkness of her own consciousness. The novel “To the Castle” (2004) was written by a talented improviser, a master of intellectual prose. The hero M. Gruber has achieved his goal - he has comprehended the unattainable, and as a result - emptiness, into which the reader of the novel finds himself immersed.
