The book by the Austrian writer and journalist, World War II participant Erich Kern (real name Erich Knud Kernmayr, 1906–1991) tells about the Germans who fought against their fatherland during the Second World War on the side of the countries of the Anti-Hitler coalition as spies and saboteurs or propagandists. Erich Kern strictly distinguishes between members of the anti-Nazi resistance who waged a political struggle against the Hitler regime and those who, for one reason or another, went into the service of Germany’s military opponents. Among the events he described were the actions of conspirators in the Abwehr, the espionage work of the Red Kapelle, the participation of German emigrants in British “black” propaganda, the activities of the National Committee of Free Germany and other examples. The author treats with understanding and respect the secret services of the countries of the Anti-Hitler coalition, who fulfilled their duty and defended the interests of their states during the war. But he has a completely different attitude towards the Germans who went over to serve the enemy.
