Joburg is under extreme stress. Suddenly, it becomes the perfect playground for a creative and extremely professional hitman, adorned with scars. Kirsten is a wandering, rebellious synesthete and a successful photographer. She has won many awards, but suffers from bad habits and infertility problems. Her life is defined by what she calls her "Black Hole": a painful emptiness felt where her heart should be. Seth is a brilliant chemical engineer and a loyal member of the underground biopunk truth-seeking organization Alba, whose mission is to expose rotten corporations and underground clinics. He is also lonely, but fills the void with things like the drugs he develops and women in mind-blowing shoes. Kirsten and Seth are personal strangers, but there seems to be some kind of connection between them: they mentally feel each other. South Africa. Two thousand and twenty-one. Once so familiar and quaint, adorned with flags and broken sidewalks, the country was now plagued by an ongoing drought and a global infertility crisis. When a journalist and Kirsten's friend discovers some mysterious information, the girls team up to investigate, and learn that Kirsten's parents were actually her kidnappers, and that the main character has a twin. A strange, mumbling woman with dog hair on her sweater warns Kirsten , and soon the woman is found dead. The police chalk it up to a suicidal illness. All these events lead the girls to the Doomsday shelter, a list of seven people and a barcode that marks Kirsten herself. Ironically, the twins are reunited thanks to the poison list, but when the bodies of other victims begin to appear, they realize that the danger is real.
