We the Animals (2011) is a bright, sensational debut by the young American writer Justin Torres. Esquire magazine named the novel the best book of the year, and the famous Michael Cunningham, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, was one of the first to speak enthusiastically about it. The book, largely autobiographical, tells the story of three brothers - through the mouth of the youngest of them - from early childhood to adolescence. The boys grow up in a poor family, their mother is white, their father is Puerto Rican. Young heroes have to deal with poverty, domestic violence, and hidden homosexuality. But in their childhood there are many amazing, tender moments, and poignant scenes of parental love and affection are worth a lot. Here's what Justin Torres himself says: “People can do wonderful things even in the most terrible circumstances.”
