The main character of the novel, the young man Etol, being a romantic and adventurer, sets off from his native Scotland to the New World. In America, in order not to die of hunger, he hires out to dig a tunnel. But the thirst for adventure and freedom does not leave him, and after some time, like the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, Etol, along with his gold-rushed comrades, sets off for the Great White Country.
