Nikki, the young daughter of Indian immigrants, lives in cosmopolitan London and works in a pub. She spent most of her life away from the traditional Punjabi community to which she belonged by birth, preferring to consider herself a free Englishwoman. After her father's sudden death, she begins teaching creative writing at a community center at London's most famous Sikh temple.
