“We did not fight with Chechens or Afghans. We were at war with the entire way of life. We fought against falsehood for goodness and justice. Every projectile fired at us was fired into the youth of this world, into faith in virtue, into love and hope. The desire to change this life. Each shell hit our hearts directly. It tore apart not only bodies, but also souls, and under this fire our worldview crumbled to dust, and there was nothing left to fill the void that had formed inside. We have nothing left but ourselves. All we have are our comrades. All we know about life is death. All we believe in is “there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends.” All we love is only our past, a ghostly mirage in the future world. We lost this war and are now licking our wounds in hospitals. But we survived. This means that operation “life” continues. A new column is already waiting at the checkpoint gate.
