We bring to the attention of the Russian-speaking reader the world-famous novel by the Slovak writer Jozho Niznansky (1903–1976) “The Bloody Countess” (the original title is “The Lady of Cachtica”, 1932). The novel is based on real historical facts that took place on at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries in one of the estates of the old Hungarian family of feudal lords Bathory. The owner of the estate and castle in the village of Chakhtitsy, Alzhbeta Bathory, wanting to preserve her extraordinary beauty and delay old age, invited young girls into her service so that, having tortured them to death with the help of ingenious devices, she would bathe in their innocent blood.
