John Carter, a rich, spoiled rake, sets out from London on a bet to prove to everyone that he can earn a living without resorting to the help of inherited capital. He learned to work with horses as a teenager, spending summer holidays with his uncle, the owner of a stud farm, and therefore, under a different name - he is too well known - he gets a job as a manager of a bankrupt horse farm. There he meets Florence, a lovely girl, the daughter of the farm owner, and out of habit decides to flirt with her.
