Oscar Wilde is one of the most original English-language writers and one of the most interesting figures in the culture of the second half of the 19th century. His brilliant paradoxes, provocative aesthetics, stubborn and consistent desire not to fit into the averageness of society, even the so-called bohemians, his sparkling humor and the subtlest irony, amazing accuracy in assessing phenomena and people, even his literary and secular mask, all this as a whole is an exceptional phenomenon in the literature and life of the 19th century. This aesthetic actor on the stage of life had an amazing view of the art of living, art as such. In the most sublime flights of thought, he did not lose irony and self-irony. Moreover, this irony was never an evil giggle, a desire to ridicule the sacred, to level the sublime. This was an attempt to put a mirror in front of society in which it would see itself without vignettes and tinsel, without masks, to force people to abandon the global habit of averaging and condemning everything that does not correspond to their ideas about the world, an attempt to reveal the full depth of public hypocrisy. The word became his main weapon and, in his skillful hand, regained its original divine power. Wilde created his own world, beautiful, amazing, exciting. He talked to us about art and life, and through his creativity he taught the Art of Living. And we have yet to learn many of its lessons.
