“Dramatic chronicle: “King Richard the Second” covers only the last two years of the reign and life of this king (1398–1400). In the first act, he appears as history shows him: autocratic, frivolous, surrounded by unworthy favorites, sparing neither the life, nor freedom, nor the property of his subjects. Both scenes between Bolingbroke, Duke of Girford, son of John Gant, Duke of Lancaster (future King Henry II) and Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, are also historically true. For the further development of the action, Holinshed's chronicle gave Shakespeare the main facts - the confiscation of the inheritance left after John Gant, Richard's departure to Ireland, the regency of the Duke of York, the landing of the exiled Bolingbroke, the rapid success of the rebellion he raised ... "The work is given in the pre-reform alphabet.
