This book is about the sensational film and the most famous criminal and political history in new Russia. The director, trying to create a credible script for a film about the theft of $230 million and the victim of the scam, is drawn into a long-term journalistic investigation. And he discovers that the story about the torture and murder in a pre-trial detention center of accountant Magnitsky, who exposed a gang of “werewolves”—budget embezzlers—is a myth created to cover up real swindlers. The myth, clearly told by financier Bill Browder, was believed and far-reaching conclusions were drawn. The American law that first introduced the model of personal sanctions was named after Magnitsky: it soon began an unprecedented sanctions war between the West and Russia. This book is also about Western censorship, which the author of the film encountered when he tried to show it. Premieres on TV and festivals have been repeatedly banned, and Nekrasov’s team has to fight for the right to talk about their view of the famous plot.
