The main character of the novel, Mathis, is an ordinary, “small” person. He lives in the outskirts of Riga and is not a superhero at all, but a bearer of the main humanistic and Christian values. An unbiased look at events fateful for Latvia and the rest of the world, expressed through the consciousness of a young man, became one of the reasons for the success of the novel. The merciless whirlwind of history draws in Mathis, who just wants to live, work, love. The sincere intonation with which the author lives the life of his hero, scrupulously reproducing spoken language and everyday circumstances, captivates from the first pages. In a seemingly simple, ironic, even in some ways almost vaudeville beginning, melodramatic notes are gradually intertwined, which through the thickening drama lead to a tragedy of the highest intensity.
