Evgeny Gustavovich Veidenbaum (1845–1918) graduated from St. Petersburg University, served in the Caucasus, from 1897 was a member, and from 1904 - chairman of the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission. He, in the words of M. O. Kosven, is “a prominent, versatile Caucasian scholar” , who was the first to begin “summarizing Caucasian ethnographic material on individual topics.” The author of works that have not lost their relevance: “Notes on the use of stone and metals among the Caucasian peoples” (1876), “About the Circassians in Dagestan” (1876), “Sacred groves and trees among the Caucasian peoples” (1878), the collection “Caucasian sketches” "(1901), a translation of the book by the Italian Xaverio Glavani "Description of Circassia 1724". The article "Caucasian Amazons", which is considered "a thorough work, almost exhaustive of the relevant material", was first published in 1872 in the magazine "Knowledge" and since then has not yet been republished. The appendix contains a section from the book “New Notes on the Ancient History of the Caucasus and Its Inhabitants” (1866) by linguist and historian A. A. Tsagareli (1844–1929), author of the article “Amazons in the Caucasus” (1870), and also an essay by the Soviet scientist V. B. Vinogradov “Who are you, brave Amazon?” - about the burial on the banks of the Malka River, in Kabardino-Balkaria.
