The Tale of the House of Taira is one of the most significant and striking works of Japanese classical literature, distinguished by its extraordinary dramatic intensity. Created in the genre of gunki (“military epics”) in the 13th century, in subsequent centuries “The Tale of the House of Taira” became an inexhaustible source of plots for new works, both in prose and drama. Various adaptations and variations of the “Tale” continue to appear in our time. There are many film and radio productions based on the epic, the narrative of which refers to one of the most tragic pages in the history of Japan - the struggle of two warring clans - Taira and Minamoto, which lasted decades and ended with the death of the feudal lords of the Taira house.
