The greatest prose writer of the first half of the 20th century, Henri de Montherlant, created a book of essays “At the Fountains of Desire” at a time that he himself called “the years of vagrancy.” The writer noted that then he experienced a real turning point. A daring thinker, Montherlant brings to the attention of his readers original, sometimes paradoxical, reasoning about the fundamental problems of existence. The author moves away from the “purely masculine” style of writing, which, in his opinion, is distinguished by a certain one-sidedness, allowing an element of “feminine sensitivity” into his prose.
