The collection “Not Later Than Midnight” by the English writer Daphne Du Maurier, first published in 1971, includes five short stories, five amazing, completely different stories. The most famous of them, “Don’t Look Back,” formed the basis of a mystical thriller directed by English director Nicolas Roeg (“Don’t Look Now,” 1973). Another half science fiction story, half philosophical parable, “Breakthrough,” is being published in Russian for the first time. All of them are written with the confident hand of a master, in an original and exciting way. Probably, the title of the story “On the Edge” most accurately defines the nature of the collection: in each story, the author leads the characters to an intuitive or conscious choice, often dangerous.
