Scotland was opened to the world by two great natives of these places - the poet Robert Burns and the novelist Walter Scott, and the re-discovery of Scotland took place already in the 20th century - and to a large extent the merit of this “discovery” belongs to Henry Wollam Morton. Morton visited Scotland twice; and if the first trip was largely “superficial”, then the second time the traveler tried to fully penetrate the Scottish spirit - and he succeeded. Wherever the road or mountain path led, Henry Morton looked around with a genuine and benevolent interest, which would seem difficult to expect from an Englishman in Scotland, with an interest that he was able to convey in his books and to which the latter owe much of their enduring popularity.
