The list of works by the remarkable English writer Daniel Defoe (1660–1731) alone constitutes a weighty volume. All his books, like bricks, would be enough for the pedestal of the monument, and there, at the very top, would rise a man in a strange attire, in a goat’s hat and with an umbrella - Robinson Crusoe, the hero of the work that ensured Defoe’s life for centuries.
