The novel “Ruby” opens a fascinating saga about the Landry family, created by the famous American writer W. C. Andrews. The beautiful Ruby is fifteen years old, she grew up in Louisiana, among the Cajuns (these are the descendants of former French residents expelled from Canada in the 18th century provinces). Ruby's mother died, so the girl was raised by her grandmother Katherine, a proud and kind Cajun medicine woman. She is implacably hostile towards her own husband, John Landry, who lives in a shack in the swamps, and whom Ruby seems to be a completely harmless drunk.
