The novel “The Beginning, or The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman,” first published in 1986 in Paris, became the pinnacle of the work of the Polish writer Andrzej Szczypiorski (1924–2000). In a short period of time, it was published in twenty countries, brought the author European fame and was awarded several literary prizes. In the novel, Szczypiorski addresses the political events that changed the life of Europe in the mid-20th century, and seeks to understand the difficult relations that have developed over the decades between Poles, Germans and Jews. In Poland, fragments of the novel are included in school anthologies.
