Quintus Septimius Florent Tertullian is one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of early Christianity, on whose works the fathers of the Catholic Church were largely based; he is also the author of the famous saying “I believe because it is absurd.” His treatises are unique in style and subject matter, where the essence of the religious metaphysics of Christianity is expressed with rare depth and passion of a scientist. The theologian strongly emphasizes the gap between biblical revelation and Greek philosophy. The paradoxical insights presented in the treatises are, in their significance, on a par with the works of many teachers of the Church and inspire reverent respect for the author.
