The book by Pavel Aleksandrovich Yungerov, professor of the Kazan Theological Academy, Doctor of Theology, “General Historical-Critical Introduction to the Holy Old Testament Books” is the result of more than thirty years of research work by the author at the Department of the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament (late 1880s). 1910 is the year of the last author’s edition of the General Introduction). Combining all the best achievements of contemporary Western biblical studies with the precision of the Orthodox approach, the work of P. A. Yungerov presents a systematic presentation of a range of general isagogical issues: about the Old Testament canon, the sacred text and translations of Old Testament books. The historical method of presenting these issues allows us to trace the various stages of the formation of the language of the sacred Old Testament writing, its canon, the history and mutual influence of later translations. In the second edition (1910), in the “General Introduction,” the author added a section on the History of Interpretation of Old Testament books, which is of particular interest, due to the little development of this issue, as an introductory and bibliographical guide to the study of Old Testament exegesis.
