Among the numerous works of Michael Psellus, the famous Byzantine writer and courtier of the 11th century, scientist, theologian, poet, rhetorician, author of the famous “Chronography,” there is a small work devoted to the analysis and comparative characteristics of the so-called Greek erotic novel by Achilles Tatius and Heliodorus. The book contains a translation with parallel Greek text and detailed commentary. The text is accompanied by an introduction and several sketches by a commentator. Both stories about the adventures of lovers have been preserved, and one can compare their interpretation by an author who is approximately the same distance from us as he is from Heliodorus and Achilles Tatius with the modern interpretation.
