In the autumn of 1912, the expedition of Lieutenant Georgy Brusilov set off for the Arctic on the schooner “St. Anna”. It was supposed to travel along the Northern Sea Route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. But the unexpected happened: in October, the ship froze in the ice near the western coast of Yamal and was then carried to high latitudes, where it disappeared without a trace. Navigator V. I. Albanov and sailor A. E. Konrad were the only ones of the 24 crew members of the “St. Anna” who managed to escape and preserve for science the most valuable materials of hydrometeorological observations in almost unexplored areas of the Arctic Ocean. The fate of G. Brusilov, the other members of the expedition, and the schooner itself is still unknown and full of mysteries. V. Albanov’s book “To the South, to Franz Josef Land!” was published in 1917. A. Conrad's diary is published for the first time.
