Jed, like all Survivors, lives in catacombs deep underground. This is a world of eternal darkness, in which people’s hearing has become so acute that residents can easily navigate the confusion of corridors and passages using the sound echo. They had the most vague ideas about sunlight and the surface, which turned into mythology. An excellent disaster novel, nominated for a Hugo Science Fiction Award in 1962. From 1962 to 2013 the novel went through 18 reprints in English. It was translated into Russian only once and printed in a small edition of 20,000 copies.
