“Two different streams are gaining increasing influence in the sphere of thought and life in our time: the scientific one, which entered into the struggle against dogmatic beliefs, and the religious one, aimed at their defense and at stimulating the intensity of church life. On the one hand, the successes of experimental sciences, having explained much that previously seemed incomprehensible, suggest that the very concept of the incomprehensible was primarily based on our ignorance alone and that we can no longer believe what we have hitherto believed. On the other hand, the practice of life and the civil soil that has been stirring up under us everywhere return the thought in many to the conviction that there is something inaccessible to us on earth, something higher, something that protects and provides us more than all codes and all inventions, something that exclusively clarifies the mystery our existence - and that this something lies precisely in the area of our successive beliefs. The movement of the two streams is not the same. The first flows smoothly, calmly, self-confidently, reflecting in its waters the cliffs of the shores of dogma that it washes away. The second encounters obstacles on its path, lingers, branches, then is illuminated by a sudden light, reconnects its streams and leaves behind, in a renewed form, the banks washed away by another stream...”
