When Albert came to that world in a foggy autumn, he was immediately made to understand that human life itself is not worth very much. The entire adult population worked at the Factory, a huge city. None of the mountaineers had ever been to the Plant, and Albert did not even know a person who could walk those kilometers that separated the Mountains from the only entrance to the Plant, the sky above which was always gray. At least none of those who went back returned.
