The novel takes place in the distant future in the space empire of humanity. People of the described era abandoned thinking machines, robots, computers (this is due to the uprising of machines that took place), and focused on developing their thinking and extrasensory abilities. The earth, modern religions and nationalities remained in an almost forgotten past. The world of Dune is a monarchical aristocratic empire covering the entire known Universe, where the Great Houses rule over entire planets. The Space Guild has a monopolist in interstellar transportation. Its guild navigators are mutants, to whom the special substance Melange gives the ability to navigate ships through collapsed space without any computers. This makes Melange (also known as spice) the most precious substance in the known universe. It is also known for its anti-aging geriatric properties. Long-term consumption of melange turns the whites and irises of the eyes blue, which is why the eyes of Fremen, Guild Navigators and many Bene Gesserit are blue - “ibad eyes”. The planet Arrakis, also called Dune, is the only source of melange. The dune is also famous for its giant sandworms that live in the desert. They are mysteriously connected to the existence of Spice. The inhabitants of Arrakis, the townspeople and the Fremen, survive in the hot and dry climate of the planet thanks to a special relationship with water: they collect and process all the secretions of their bodies, and the Fremen extract water from the bodies of the dead before burial for further use.
