Capitalism is the only system we know of that can provide an efficient and innovative economy, but the financial crisis has exposed the destructive side of capitalism and shown that the latter still depends on the state for its survival. Can capitalism be reformed so that it becomes acceptable to society, or should we accept the view that society is better off leaving markets completely free in all areas? The purpose of this book is to show that accepting capitalism and the market does not mean acceptance of the idea of unfettered markets, insecurity in the labor market and neglect of the environment and public services. In particular, embracing capitalism does not mean supporting the growing influence of corporate wealth in public life. The greatest successes in the world today are achieved by those economies that combine market discipline and the need for protection from its negative consequences. The ongoing and intractable clash between these two forces is itself an important source of vitality and innovation for the economy and society. But maintaining this tension depends on maintaining strong trade unions and other important civil society groups.
