Personality of the outstanding philologist, literary critic, cultural scientist Yu.M. Lotman (1922–1993), one of the founders of the famous Tartu School, his life and work are of particular interest to researchers today. That is why M.V. Sonkina decided to publish not only the memoirs of her mother F.S. Sonkina, but also her diaries and correspondence with Lotman, representing a lively, excited conversation between two loving people. Acquaintances from student years, Yu.M. Lotman and F.S. Sonkina became close two decades later and since then their relationship has played a huge role in everyone’s lives. Unlike the letters of many famous correspondents and colleagues of Lotman, their correspondence almost does not touch upon scientific problems; it is addressed to private, everyday, spiritual life, illuminating both the inner world of Yuri Mikhailovich and the character of the woman whom he loved for many years. As Lotman himself said, “history passes through a person’s home, through his private life.” In this sense, the correspondence between Lotman and Sonkina will enter Russian culture not only as vivid evidence of a feeling rare in intensity and height, but also as evidence of the era.
