The book by Polish researcher Radoslaw Sikora is one of the most significant results of the author’s many years of work on the history of the famous “winged” hussars of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. On the pages of this monograph, the reader is presented, in fact, with a real encyclopedia, covering all possible aspects of the history of not only this particular type of cavalry, but also the military service of the Polish gentry in general in the 16th-17th centuries. The author approaches the subject not as an armchair historian, but as a practitioner - after all, he himself is one of the participants in historical reconstruction. Hence the keen interest in such unusual topics as breeds of hussar horses, camp and camp life, food and hygiene in war, and, of course, weapons, clothing, and external attributes of the hussar. It should also be noted that the list of sources and literature is exceptional in scope, which is an honor and, as it were, crowns this publication. The reader, especially the Russian one, will argue and disagree with many of the author’s views and theses, but this is inevitable in relation to the work of a military historian so passionate about his topic.
