The book was first published in 1928 in Germany and became a kind of manifesto of modern typography. This thorough and engaging study covers a wide range of topics, from theories of social criticism and art history to the growing importance of photography in graphic design. In addition, in “New Typography” Jan Tschichold formulates extremely clear and precise rules for the design of printed materials. The final chapters contain detailed practical instructions on the layout of everyday business documents - right down to recommendations on choosing paper size and the right combination of fonts.
Despite the fact that the standards described in the book are outdated and not used, and Tschichold himself eventually abandoned Based on the many ideas expressed, the publication will be useful to graphic designers, type designers, illustrators and layout designers, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the history of graphic and type design.
