The novel takes place in England at the beginning of the 19th century. The heroine of the novel, Bennett, a young art teacher at a girls' boarding school, finds herself involved in the struggle to uncover the secrets of "ghosts", the appearance of which threatens the collapse of the boarding house and at the same time the collapse of her career. In this struggle, she is helped by an extremely attractive and noble young man - and now her heart is also in danger.
