The author of the memoirs, a veteran of two world wars, began his service as a simple soldier in 1913 in a telegraph battalion in Munich and ended it in Reims with the rank of general, as chief of communications of the ground forces, when in May 1945 he was arrested and sent away to a prisoner of war camp. Along with describing events on the European front, Praun notes the critical importance of communications for successful military operations. In the most detailed way, he examines various types of communications, new inventions in this area and the difficulties of their implementation in war conditions. The author pays special attention to the everyday life of a German soldier at the front. Concluding his memoirs, General Praun shares his feelings caused by the new disaster that befell German weapons and his indignation at the “unfair” trial at Nuremberg. The appendix contains maps, diagrams and command orders for communications formations during the Second World War.
